Period: 20th Century
1910-present - Includes a wide range of styles such as Neoclassic, Neo-romantic, Expressionist and Atonal.
With the beginning of the 20th century, a bigger gap develops between "art" or "classical" music, and "popular" music.
The 20th Century Music Period evolves in a number of different directions: Impressionism (Debussy, Ravel, Dukas, Satie); Nationalism (Grieg, Sibelius, Elgar, Vaughn-Williams, Kodaly, Bartok); Verismo (Puccini, Leoncavallo, Mascagni); Atonality (Schoenberg, Berg).
Compositional techniques include 12-tone rows and bi-tonality (playing in two different keys simultaneously).
There are many overlaps between Modern Period and 20th Century Period.
