The musicians of the Artemiss Trio are a superbly integrated and musically unified group, but flautist Zofie Vokálová also fits in like a permanent member of the ensemble. Her tone is crisp and pleasant, and doesn’t weigh the notes with too much vibrato. The ArcoDiva engineers have done a superb job on the recording, which is lucid and transparent, while at the same time communicating all of the expressive heft in the fine playing. This is a recommended disc for all comers: Martinu newbies and connoisseurs alike, including those who have a few of these pieces already dotted throughout their collections, and especially those who savour the finest in chamber music.

There is next to no information in the notes about this forgotten composer and, like Sterling did recently with the Robert Herrmann symphonies, the notes on the music consist entirely in notes and reviews from contemporary German journals and newspapers. However, we do find that one of his associates called Hill “Frankfurt’s Schubert”. His melodic gift is undeniable in these trios of 1863 and 1878 but, not surprisingly, he does not plumb Schubert’s psychological depths. This music will be an utter delight to collectors of Raff, Eduard and Richard Franck and other purveyors of Mendelssohian melodic charm. Original 2006 release.

Touring all over the world, with concert dates in the top venues, the Vertavo have established themselves among the first rate chamber ensembles of today. They have released highly acclaimed discs with music by Bartok (complete quartets), Schumann, Brahms, Nielsen, Debussy, Grieg and many more.

The six movement op. 130 was written between August and November 1825, in a rare period of relatively good health for the composer in these his later years. Beethoven’s original idea was of course to have the Grosse Fuge as the finale of the op. 130. Only after the Quartet was completed and premiered did he listen to the urgings of friends and issue that finale, of unparalleled intensity and difficulty, as a separate composition. He then wrote a new and more light-hearted finale for the op. 130 Quartet a movement which chanced to be his very last composition.

While the Grosse Fuge was, for nearly a hundred years, almost never played, and is nowadays generally performed as a work in its own right, its original function as a finale for op. 130 has never been forgotten. Of course a recording allows the listener to choose between these two finales at will. But the choice is not a simple one. For the movement that is chosen as the finale retrospectively changes the entire orientation of the other five movements of op. 130: it is not a matter of one work with two different conclusions, but five movements which belong, depending on the choice of finale, to two different works. With the Grosse Fuge as finale, movements I-V become essentially a vast and varied prelude to it, preparing the way for the prodigious fugue much as movements I-III of the Ninth Symphony are in one sense the prelude to the huge choral finale. If staying with the final op. 130, the six movements coexist on much more equal terms, with the greatest expressive weight falling on the first, third and fifth movements.

Australia's first and finest period-instrument orchestra, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra perform regularly to sell-out audiences around Australia and overseas.

Their vibrant concerts combine historical integrity with electrifying virtuosity and a passion for beauty. Hoffmeister went to Vienna at the age of fourteen to study law. Following his studies, however, he decided on a career in music and by the 1780s he had become one of the city’s most popular composers, with an extensive and varied catalogue of works to his credit.

Hoffmeister’s reputation today however rests almost exclusively on his activities as a music publisher. By 1785 he had established one of Vienna’s first music publishing businesses, second only to Artaria & Co which had ventured into the field just five years earlier. Hoffmeister published his own works and those of many important composers of the time, including Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Clementi, Albrechtsberger, Dittersdorf, and Vanhal. These famous composers were also among Hoffmeister's personal friends: Mozart dedicated his String Quartet in D (K.499) to him, and Beethoven addressed him in a letter as "most beloved brother".

Hermann Goetz (1840-1876): Piano Quintet in C minor, Op. 16

Ensemble Il Trittico

Of the string and keyboard chamber ensembles favored by composers in the 19th century, the piano quintet has always proven to be one of the most challenging, since its complement of four strings and piano presents specific difficulties of balance and texture. These difficulties inspired both Joseph Joachim Raff (27 March 1822 " 25 June 1882) and Hermann Goetz (7 December 1840 " 2 December 1876) to create the works presented on this CD:

Joseph Joachim Raff: Quintet for piano, two violins, viola and violoncello in A minor op. 107 (1862);
Phantasie op. 207B for piano, two violins, viola and violoncello (first-ever recording)

Hermann Goetz: Quintet for piano, violin, viola, violoncello and double bass in C minor op. 16

This program was recorded by the Ensemble Trittico, whose core grouping consists of the experienced chamber trio Jan Schultsz, Jonathan Allen and Daniel Pezzotti. For this recording, the trio was joined by some high-caliber partners and friends who smoothly inserted themselves into the respective quintet formations. The result: three unique interpretations and the fulfillment of a long-held wish of Divox producer and founder Wolfram M. Burgert.

The Trio Trittico unites three exceptional, internationally recognized artists in a unique ensemble concept which is stamped by a high measure of enthusiasm and creativity, which in the present recording is also expressed in a larger medium.

Recently one musical treasure after the other is being unearthed. One of these discoveries is the music of the all but forgotten composer Georgy Catoire (Moscow 1861-1926). By the end of the twentieth century Catoire’s music has been gradually gaining worldwide public recognition. Old recordings have been released again and various English, American, German and Dutch musicians have made new ones. Arditti Quartet

Ole Henrik Moe (born in Oslo 1966) has composed chamber and orchestra music, performed in concerts and on radio and television in Norway and abroad. He has contributed both as composer and performer (as we shall hear in his work "Tre Persefone Persepsjoner) to a number of "crossover" projects, as well as appearing as a jazz violinist. Ole Henrik Moe is a renowned improvisor and has participated in theatre productions and modern dance performances.

The Arditti Quartet enjoys a worldwide reputation for their spirited and technically refined interpretations of contemporary and earlier 20th century music. Several hundred string quartets and other chamber works have been written for the ensemble since its foundation by first violinist Irvine Arditti in 1974. World premieres of quartets by composers such as Birtwistle, Cage, Carter, Ferneyhough, Gubaidulina, Harvey, Hosokawa, Kagel, Kurtag, Lachenmann, Ligeti, Nancarrow, Rihm, Scelsi, Stockhausen and Xenakis show the wide range of music in the Arditti Quartet’s repertoire.

The ensemble believes that close collaboration with composers is vital to the process of interpreting modern music and therefore attempts this with every composer whose works it plays. It is not every day that the Arditti quartet invites a composer to play with them as a soloist. Irvine Arditti says that "Ole-Henrik Moe has produced a series of string pieces that are original and truly innovative in their style of playing and the way one listens to music. A close collaboration with the Arditti quartet has ensured that these recordings will be truly representative of the composer’s wishes."

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791): Wind Serenades No. 12 in C minor and No. 10 in B flat major

Chamber Soloists of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

Mozart Wind Serenades was recorded on 21st August 2007, during the Summer Serenade concerts of the Chamber Soloists of the RPO in the superb acoustics of Cadogan Hall, home of the Royal Philharmonic.

Mozart Wind Serenades was engineered, produced and mastered by acclaimed classical recording engineer Tony Faulkner in vibrant 24bit 88.2 kHz (high resolution) digital.
The marriage of the UKs most prestigious orchestra with the UKs foremost high-end audio product manufacturer and label is pure destiny. It represents a significant introduction for Naim's brand new Classical label and all involved hope it will be a long and prosperous relationship.

RYELANDT: Chamber Music - In Flanders Fields Vol. 55

http://classical.premieremusic.net/catalog/cd/PH92055/

Joseph Ryelandt (1870-1965)

Piano Quintet in a minor (1901); Adagio for String Quartet in f sharp minor, op.13 (1895);
String Quartet no. 2 in f minor (1903); Andante "Ach Tjanne" and Variations for Piano Sextet in g minor (1933)

Spiegel String Quartet: Elisa Kawaguti, violin, Stefan Willems, violin, Leo de Neve, alto, Jan Sciffer, cello

Over a creative period that was to span half a century, from 1895 to 1945, Joseph Ryelandt became one of the most remarkable late-romantic composers in Belgium. He was 27 when Johannes Brahms died. His musical oeuvre is extensive. He composed a number of majestic oratorios, five symphonies, the opera "Cecilia", cantatas, choral music,sixty outstanding songsto Dutch and French texts, a wealth of chamber music for various ensembles and an important oeuvre for piano, which reveal the refinement of his creative genius.

The majority of his works remained unknown. His reaction was typical: 'If God wants my work to be recognized one day, it will. If not, what does it matter? The artist's task is to create, that's all. Success is a luxury and a pleasure, but this are not indispensable…'

All recorded compositions are for the first time on cd.
The marvelous performances on this CD will reveal to you a truly great composer. Let the joy of discovering him be yours.

The Slåtter op. 72 of Edvard Grieg for the first time brought Norwegian folk music to a wide international audience. His love for nature and the traditional music was truly great, equalled only by his pioneering spirit when it came to bringing it into art music. But was he true to his sources? In the same year of the 100th year commemoration of his death, Simax presents a revised edition of op. 72 - based on new transcriptions of the original material.

Toutes Suites; Marianne R. Pfau, baroque oboe & director

Open the corset and breathe freely! Away with bloodless chirping and that skinny, hollow sound! The "hoboist band" of the Californian "Toutes Suites" offers full, voluptuous life, as shown in the pictures of Rubens or Caravaggio. Figures like those from "Cyrano de Bergerac" appear on the musical stage prepared for us by the Thuringian composer Jean-Michel Muller. Baroque emotions which converse like genuine persons, introducing themselves to us and then making room for the next god, the next shepherd or the next satyr. It is incredible with what display of splendour, with what variety of colour such a "hoboist band" of just seven musicians can fly along… You, dear reader, don't yet know who or what such a "band" is? Just buy the new GENUIN CD - you'll find the answer and much more. But read before you switch on the CD player, because by then you'll only want to revel in the music!

...a delight from beginning to end...real musical substance...performances are impressive, enjoyable, and satisfying... Don Bailey boasts a brilliant technique and a bristling sense of excitement. Donald Sulzen is an adept and vigorous accompanist. The performance is excellent, highly charged, and exciting. The Poulenc Sonata is played brilliantly. The program is leavened by three works of lesser dimensions, each of which is performed beautifully.
